Dive Update on Milfoil Control Efforts at Swains Lake

We are excited to share the results of the latest dive operation conducted by Aqualogic on Monday, 08/05/2024. Our ongoing efforts to manage and control the invasive milfoil in Swains Lake are yielding positive outcomes, thanks to the dedication and expertise of our partners and volunteers.

Dive Operation Highlights

Dominic and his team of divers from Aqualogic carried out a thorough inspection of the designated areas in Swains Lake. Here's a summary of their findings:

1. **Half-Day Dive**: The team efficiently completed their inspection in half a day, focusing on the area directed by Amy P. Smagula from the NH Department of Environmental Services.

2. **No Milfoil Growth Detected**: Encouragingly, the divers did not find any milfoil growth in the surveyed area. This is a positive indicator of the effectiveness of our ongoing control measures.

3. **Fragments Found**: While no active growth was detected, the divers did find a few milfoil fragments in the area. Additionally, some fragments were observed at the boat launch. These floaters are a significant concern as they suggest the presence of milfoil growth nearby.

4. **Focus on Boat Launch Area**: The team did not dive around the boat launch area itself, which is believed to be the area Amy recommends for treatment. The presence of fragments in this area highlights the need for targeted treatment to prevent further spread.

Next Steps

Based on these findings, we are taking the following actions:

- **Targeted Treatment**: We will focus our efforts on treating the boat launch area, as it appears to be a critical zone for milfoil growth. This targeted approach aims to address the source of the fragments and prevent further spread.

- **Continued Monitoring**: Ongoing monitoring and regular inspections will be conducted to ensure early detection and prompt action against any new milfoil growth. This proactive approach is vital to maintaining the health of Swains Lake.

- **Community Involvement**: We encourage the community to remain vigilant and report any sightings of milfoil or suspicious plant fragments. Your cooperation is essential in our collective efforts to protect Swains Lake.

A BIG Thank You

We extend our sincere thanks to Dominic and the Aqualogic team for their diligent work and timely update. We also appreciate the guidance and support from Amy P. Smagula and the NH Department of Environmental Services.

Our commitment to preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of Swains Lake remains steadfast. Together, we can ensure that our lake remains a pristine and enjoyable destination for all.
